The Boxer Revolution by Mitch Dowd
Mitch Dowd designs and manufactures high quality boxer shorts, fitted boxer shorts, and briefs as well as sleepwear and socks for men, women and children.
In late 1987, 24 year old artist Mitch Dowd was wandering along Chapel Street in Prahran, VIC trying to sell hand painted boxer shorts to help finance a forthcoming art exhibition. Within a week, he had sold 150 boxers, and a few weeks later David Jones ordered 5,000 units and Myer Grace Bros ordered 5,000 units.
Within a couple of months, Mitch had a budding business, the boxer short craze had excited retailers and men were eagerly joining the boxer short revolution.
In 1993, Mitch's younger brother Jason joined the business. As Managing Director, Jason's financial savvy and corporate strengths, gave Mitch the ability to concentrate solely on design, which from humble beginnings has grown into one of the most widely recognised names in men's fashion. Mitch now concentrates his energies on providing wonderful art under the name of Mitch McAuley.
In 2005, ANZ Private Equity purchased the business and a recent review determined that the business would strengthen with a management buy in, and recruitment of key positions. In August 2009 this strategy was formerly executed and Mitch Dowd Design reverted to private ownership.
Today Mitch Dowd is the market leader in fashion underwear and sleepwear, with four divisions targeting all areas of the underwear and sleepwear market in Australia and New Zealand. The business continues to grow and thrive due to a great team of staff and vision from the senior management team.
